The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Sees Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
